Program Description:  

It is estimated that 10-20% of the population experiences some form of dyslexia.  This workshop will provide an overview of dyslexia and its linguistic underpinnings.  Participants will learn about the many myths and facts surrounding dyslexia and what types of interventions are recommended for students who experience these challenges.  

 

Learning Outcomes:  

 

  • Define dyslexia and the most common myths surrounding these difficulties
  • Examine the underlying linguistic components of early reading and how these components differ for individuals with dyslexia
  • Learn how achievement gaps are formed and how school systems better respond to these unique learning needs
  • Define multi-sensory, structured literacy and why this approach is recommended by the International Dyslexia Association
  • Explain some of the common pitfalls that prevent students from making aggressive gains

 

Bio:  

Marianne Nice is a speech-language pathologist and reading specialist with 20 years experience in K-12 education.  Inspired by her dyslexic mother, Marianne specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia and related literacy disorders. She regularly provides professional development and consultation to school systems both locally and nationally.   Marianne  is formerly an adjunct faculty member for the University of New Hampshire's Speech-Language Pathology program, teaching a course in language and literacy disorders. She has been an eight-time speaker at the ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) National Convention and recently spoke at the 2019 International Dyslexia Association's National Convention. Marianne lives in the U.S.  with her husband, also a teacher, and her two children.
