DiLGEM & withVR Collaborate on Virtual Reality in Speech-Language Therapy

Speech-language therapy is great. With speech-language therapy, you can learn new speech techniques, understand more about yourself, and be more at ease when speaking. The speech clinic provides a safe environment, which will forever be valuable to many. With technology improving, additional tools emerge that we can use, adding to the value that already exists in the clinic.

In recent years, virtual reality technology has been booming, and it has enormous benefits. Virtual reality totally immerses you into the virtual situation, it feels real, and research shows that you can also feel like you are really there. With virtual reality, you could be in a café – asking for your favorite drink, you could be giving a speech to a group of people, or even practicing for an interview for your dream job. With virtual reality, speaking situations become limitless.

Using virtual reality, you can practice a wide range of speaking situations, change that situation in any way you like, and stop it if you need a quick exit. So how can we take advantage of this great technology?

Fortunately, on the 22nd of October (International Stuttering Awareness Day) last year, withVR was born. withVR better prepares people with speech disorders for real-life speaking situations by utilizing the power of virtual reality, striving to ensure that anyone can use their voice whenever they like, no matter their difference.

Currently, withVR is collaborating with leading experts from more than 60 clinics, labs, and hospitals from 20+ different countries worldwide – and Dilgem is one of those.

Using withVR, you can practice asking for your favorite coffee, challenge yourself by speaking to a group of people, better prepare yourself for an interview for your dream job, and so much more.

The Founder of withVR, Gareth Walkom BSc(Hons) MSc MBCS, says, “I’ve stuttered ever since about the age of six, and technology is my passion. Since 2015, I’ve been researching how I can combine my passion and create something innovative that has the potential to benefit so many people with a speech disorder, just like me. The collaboration with Dilgem is something I’m incredibly excited about, and it will not be long until those in the Dilgem community can benefit from the powerful tool of withVR.”
