The core base of work principles for psychological counseling unit revolves around assessment, intervention, monitoring, and follow-up processes.
Assessment phase regards the client’s psychological, academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral assessment during the first interview. These sessions include several tests, observations, and interviews conducted to identify the client’s needs. In this phase, both the client and her/his family are separately interviewed. After making decisions as to the intensity, duration, and structure of counseling process, either the intervention phase commences or relevant referrals are made, if need be. Intervention sessions and both counseling and therapy processes for the child/adolescent are outlined in accordance with the client’s age and needs. Intervention phase is composed of various techniques. This process may be administered with only the client or together with her/his family or the caregiver. Such intervention efforts involve endeavors to train parents or caregivers as co-therapists especially for preschool population.
Being an indispensable component of the entire process, monitoring and follow-up procedures regard face-to-face or telephone interviews with the family after the client’s problem has been eliminated or the target skill has been acquired.
