Marissa A. Barrera, MS, MPhil, MSCS, CCC-SLP, PhD is an internationally recognized Medical Speech-Language Pathologist and Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist. Dr. Barrera has extensive training in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with neurological conditions and is a leading expert on the use of modalities, including NMES for swallowing rehabilitation.
As a respected researcher and author, Dr. Barrera has lectured around the globe on a wide range of clinical care topics ranging from dysphagia, NMES, motor speech disorders, cognition and neurogenerative diseases.
She serves as the Program Director and Associate Professor of Yeshiva University's Graduate Program in medical speech-language pathology. Dr. Barrera is also the founder and owner of New York Neurogenic Speech-Language Pathology PC, in New York City. She graduated college summa cum laude, received her Masters of Science from Columbia University, and earned both her Masters of Philosophy and her PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center.
Has been an internationally respected medical speech-language pathologist for the better part of 2 decades and holds varying degrees and experiences from all over the world. Currently, Andrew is the clinical director at Yeshiva University. He has been using telepractice to reach patient’s globally for over a decade and teaches others how to do the same. He earned his master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Wayne State University and an MBA with a concentration in healthcare economics and administration from the University of Cincinnati. He authored and published the book The Voice Ball Protocol in 2018. He travels the globe as a sought-after lecturer/instructor in the areas of voice disorders, transgender voice, telemedicine, GERD/reflux, and swallowing disorders. Andrew is an advanced clinician using endoscopy and FEES as diagnostic and biofeedback tools for GERD. He uses his business and dysphagia expertise to establish new FEES programs across the country and the world.
Dr. Barbara O’Connor Wells is an Associate Professor and Clinical Supervisor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Barbara teaches coursework and supervises individual and group treatment sessions in the areas of dysphagia, motor speech, and adult language disorders. Barbara is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and has over 20 years of experience in acute, subacute, long term, and homecare rehabilitation of adult neurogenic communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders. She is licensed in both Florida and New York. Barbara’s clinical experiences have traversed the lifespan, from infants to older adults, and she has also practiced clinically in schools and private practice settings. Prior to Nova Southeastern University, Barbara was an Instructor in the Communication Sciences Program at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Barbara’s primary research and clinical interests include dysphagia, aphasia in monolingual and bilingual populations, aphasia in Spanish speakers, and the aging brain. She has several journal article and book chapter publications in scholarly journals, including Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics, Brain and Language and Topics in Geriatric Medicine, and has a long history of national and international conference presentations. She is currently involved in several research projects at NSU: swallowing disorders in individuals with Chagas disease in South America, the aging swallow, viscosity of the Varibar® barium product used during the Modified Barium Swallow Study, aphasia in Spanish speakers and bilingual aphasia treatment.
After graduating from İstinye University Faculty of Health Sciences, Language and Speech Therapy Undergraduate Program, he continues his education in the Master's Program with Thesis in the Department of Language and Speech Therapy at the same university. The areas of study are predominantly pediatric nutrition and swallowing disorders, acquired language and speech disorders. During the training, he presented his studies on swallowing and cognition at domestic and international congresses. He is a member of the Association of Language and Speech Therapists and ASHA. He is currently working at Erenköy Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital in Istanbul.
