Lidcombe Program is a behavioral program used to treat children under 6 years of age and who stutter. It might be convenient for older kids too. The program takes its name from a neighborhood close to Sydney, where the Australian Stuttering Research Centre is located.
Treatment is carried out daily by the child's caregiver or parent. Parents learn how to perform the treatment during weekly visits to a speech language therapist. During these visits, the speech language therapist teaches the parents all of the dimensions of the treatment. Therapist observes the parent while s/he performs the treatment and give feedback on how the treatment is going. This part of education is important because the responsibility of the speech language therapist is to make sure that the treatment is done properly and to create a positive experience for the child and the family.
Treatment is applied directly. This means that the parent is directly involved in the child's conversation with their comment. Comments from parents often have to be positive. The parent primarily comments positively when the child does not stutter, and when s/he sees the stuttering behavior, s/he decreases the positive comments. The parent comments positively to the child not continuously throughout the child's speech, but at specific times of her/his choice. In addition to learning how to make positive comments, the parent also learns to measure the child's stuttering behavior. The parent scores the speech of the child between 0 and 9 on a scale throughout the day. When stuttering behavior does not occur, s/he uses 0, if extremely light it is 1, and 9 for excessive stuttering. Each time they visit the clinic, the speech and language therapist and the parent compare the frequency ratings of the previous week to see if the non-clinical treatment works. This is an important process for the proper progression of the treatment.
